Caloutta formosa
Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, Mexico
Oct. 2 I gleaned the following from Alvarez today:
1. Caloutta is "abundant" all around Tuxtla
-especially at the edges of town. Best place to
collect is east of town about 5 Km. Only the
"urraca cabeza azul" occurs at Tuxtla. He
has one specimen in his collection at home and
2 mounted at the Museo (all typical C. formosa).
2. Caloutta is a bird of the lowlands, occurring
at Arriaga and Tonala (Alvarez observed them
there several years ago). The most northern
point he has seen them is at Villa Allende.
He said he was surprised to find them at Villa
Allende "because it is too high for them there"
Caloutta is "rare" at Villa Allende. (Villa Allende
is, occ. to him, the same as San Fernando on the
Amer. Geog. Soc. Map. Santa Rita is a ranch
near there, if it is 3000 ft. high it is about 1200
feet higher than Tuxtla. Alvarez took the "urraca
cabeza negra" in January. Only one seen by him.
Said he knew it was "different" by the way it flew
(nothing specific on this point) and because it was
more "robust" Nothing known about possible
differences in voice between this & C. formosa,
Psilornis is present at Villa Allende (apparently
uncommon) "a few flocks" but is more common along the Rio
Chiapa to the NW of there. It is said to become
