R.K. Selander, 1953 76 Puerto Airsta, Chiapas, Mexico Oct. 31 here at this season. Land from Tonalá to within a mile or so of Puerto Arista is pretty uniform- savanna until large trees and thick hedgerows. Nov. 1- Skinning birds all day. But later in afternoon spotted [illegible] Nov. 2 Hunted an hour around Tonalá and got two chickenpeis and 2 Caloitta formosa. Spent rest of day getting ready to leave Tonalá by train tomorrow. Noted spotted sand piper along the river. Paid 34½ pesos for room and board since the 23rd. Gave Bonifacio 25 pesos for new pair of shoes. Nov. 3 Tonalá to Tuxtla Gutiérrez- By train from Tonalá to Arriaga; by autos bus from Arriaga to Tuxtla Gutiérrez. Nov. 4 Bought food for 5 days and drove to San Fernando with Bonifacio. Decided to stay until 5p. rather than pitch tent because of the weather. Clouds hanging just above the town- rather cold. Hunted on horse for several hours in the afternoon but finds very inactive. No sign of Caloitta. Talked with my guides of previous trips and with several other people but none had anything new on the 'sarraca calega negra'. Nov. 5 Rain during the night and all through the morning. In early afternoon it stopped raining
