La Polka, 25 ft., Chiapas, Mexico
Oct. 28 Mojarra's region and claimed the "chancocá" was
"bastante" around Mojarra's and at some place
way down the coast. He also claimed to have
seen them near Chiapa - but this may be Helodytes
gonotus.
(It will be necessary to collect specimens of the
vegetation before returning to Tuxtla'. Miranda's
book is of no value in identifying the vegetation.
The photographs are so poor that I can't use the
book at all.)
It will be important to hunt in the mountains
NE of La Polka and east of Tonala'. Also we
must hunt along the road from Tonala' to La
Barita since wrens probably occur there. There
may be a valley between the hill NE of La
Polka and the main mountain mass.
None of the natives at La Polka knew the
giant wren (chicpensis) so I guess it does
not occur there. It may occur at Esmeralda
where the vegetation looks OK. for it.
Elevation at La Polka is probably very close to
sea-level.
Tomorrow we are going to Mojarra's where I hope
to get a good series of nigricaudatus and study their
habitat.
