La Polka, 25 ft Chiapas, Mexico
Oct. 28 mountains is farther inland and runs in pretty
much a straight line SE. However, more seaward
there are a series of these dry, small hills
which seem to surround the laguna, (See maps).
Took two specimens of nigricaudatus. Returned on
train at 9:00 P.M., arriving at Tonalá around
7:15.. Caloitta formosa in a flock of 15 or more
birds in corn field. Took one specimen. Icterus
gularis common. Fregata magnificens flying over
the hills and the laguna. Many Aratinga. Laughing
one falcon seen. Caracara (cheirway) - pair seen.
Cassidix mexicanus and Crotophaga
suleirostris common. Many herons and ducks
in the laguna. Saw one spoonbill and several
brown pelicans.
Land south to about Esmeralda is the same
as at Tonalá. Savanna with large trees and thick
hedgerows of bushes, vines and smaller trees.
Nearing the laguna the forest, trees are smaller in height
and much drier in appearance. Bull. horn acacia
was fairly common around La Polka but was
smaller - both thorns and leaves - and may be
another species than that around Tonalá.
Several natives at La Polka said it is
possible to drive by car from Tonalá to La Polka
and beyond in dry months - March - May. The
road is not shown on the map I have, however.
