(Selander, 1953 57 Oct. 23 Tonala, Chiapas, Mexico Several vireos yellow warbler - not sure. Icterus gularis - common Cistophaga subinortue - common * Icteria virides Took letter of introduction from Alvarez to the Presidente of Tonala in the "Palace". He is to arrange for a boy to act as our guide and will give us a letter for the head man at Mojarra when we head down that way. Skinned 7 birds in afternoon. Feeling a little sick - muscles in arms ache. Extremely hot here. Lights are turned off at 9:00 I understand but a Kerosene lamp is available in the room. Bought a roll of cotton for 3+ pesos. No "wata" = cheap sheet cotton - seems to be available here. There is a place near the hotel which sells "agua pura" - will try a jug. Several "libres" about town but only one or two any good. Had a look at the Hotel Central near the Plaza - which is said to be the best in town - but it looks no better than the one in which we are staying.
