K. Selander, 1953 Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, Mexico Oct. 22 Left Tuxtla by automobile with Bonifacio at 2:30 P.M., heading for Arriaga. Had 200 pesos when we started. Bus costs +/- 20 pesos for the two tickets. Country just west of Tuxtla is same as at Tuxtla. At Ocozocoautla it is more arid with fewer trees. A large tuna cactus present but sparsely distributed. Merguite-like bushes + small trees common. Much grass along with semi-barren rock areas. Whole deal looks like some of the more barren parts of New Mexico. It looks like fair habitat for C. brunneicapillus but apparently the species is not present. At Cintalapa the road turns south & climbs very gradually. Pines come in just before the summit of the Sierra Madre - a few scattered over otherwise barren hills. At the summit and just before there are many large oaks. The road descends in a series of sharp turns through, I believe, oak forest (it was just after sunset when we reached the summit and started down). It looks dry on the southern slope - not humid as I expected. Saw no more of the country because of darkness. Stayed the night in the Hotel Pan Americana in Arriaga. 16 pesos + 8 for 2 cenas. Went to the Cine. Oct 23 Left Arriaga at 6:30 A.M. in a libre heading for Tonala - 50 pesos. Road very bad with
