47 Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, Mexico Oct. 21 Spent day stuffing specimens (19) and writing field notes. Summary of Information and Thinking on Block-headed Jay Problem. 1. Distribution - This jay has been seen only near Santa Rita (by Alvarez in January but by Helbeco Ruiz and Ruben Ruiz) and at San Pedro Muniz (by Enrique Lopez). One of the Ruiz men saw "a flock of 4 several years ago" (acc. to Alvarez) and the other saw "2 several years ago." Helbeco claims it is "common" at Santa Rita but his info. is highly untrustworthy. The localities where the bird has been seen are similar - forest (deciduous, evergreen mixture) around milpas. Both are localities where Calsetta is present though not in such numbers as around Tuxtla and lower down to the south in the San Fernando Valley. My second guide had never seen the bird through he had heard about it from Enrique Lopez and, I presume, the Ruiz men. I doubt that few if any other men in the San Fernando area know the bird. None of the children know it and I never questioned another Mexican native who I felt knew what the differences between the "oguil" and "negra".
