Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, Mexico-
Oct. 17 San Pedro Miring area I will focus all attention
on the Monte de la Plema since if the bird didn't
have a hybrid origin-the next most logical hypothesis
is that it is a new species from isolated up there
on the Monte de la Plema and only occasionally
getting down to the lower lands. - This time I
must try and get some definite information on
the occurrence of the black-headed jay, It will be
easier since that bastard Helfego wont be along
to prompt them.
Will return to Tuxtla Tuesday night by taxi.
- Out hunting today along the Rio Salinial
northeast of Tuxtla. Quite a few birds for a change.
There is also farming all along the river - corn,
sugar, cane, a few licuana & orange trees --
and various other native crops. There is a
large conifer all along the river, called the
"Salino". Took a specimen of Dendroica aurea (X),
also Wilsonia pusilla, Dendrocopos scalaris,
Empidonax minimum riparia -, Seturus punctulatus,
Tyrannus melancholicus, Turdus grayi - common
in flocks, Piaya cayana - several seen, Polioptila
-probably caerulea. Also got 4 Caloitta formosa.
Shot a large snake on sand along river. Frogs
common in little pools but I have nothing to pre-
serve them in. Took a small lizard, others about
7" long, probably of same species, were seen.
