R.K.Selander, 1953 32 Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, Mexico Oct. 17 Always says that the top of the Monte de la Pluma is "much higher" than the plateau of Sremadero and that, in fact, the Monte de la Pluma is much the highest place around Tuxtla. He claims there is another monte near Ocozocoautla which may be as high. In light of this information I have decided on the following plan: Monday at 4:30 A.M. I will leave Tuxtla and go to San Fernando in a taxi with Bonifacio. A guide is to meet us there at 6:00 A.M. We will rent horse again from Sr. Ruben Diaz and head for San Pedro Muniz. Will carry only two days food and no tent or skinning gear. Will "gut" all specimens & prepare them later in Tuxtla. If Calvitita and Psilorhina are common near the river, I can get some idea if whether or not they are mixing. It will be good to see their distribution in any case. If I find no evidence of the block-headed jay there or on my way to that place I will attempt to circle around the Monte de la Pluma, questioning everyone I meet about possible trails up to the top. If I find nothing on this trip we can be sure that it isn't going to be possible to get the strange bird at the present time. If there is no evidence of the block-headed jay at the
