R.K.Selander, 1953 27 Santa Rita, Chiapas, Mexico Oct. 13 Hunted below (west) camp for several hours in early morning. No Calcutta seen or heard. Took two Xanthura yucua from a flock of 5 or so in thick woods near the tent. Also collected one Trogon collaris at some spot. Took two Gymnostrops montezuma - this is the large cacique I have noted before. Collected one Saltator strieps. Slightly cloudy most of day. No large jays heard until about 5:00 P.M when one called once from forest across arroyo from camp. Went to investigate but couldn't locate the bird. Took two more Xanthura in same patch of forest - flock of about 8 birds. We talked with two more Mexican farmers here - neither distinguished "urroca c. negra" from "u. c. azul." Food is running low. We have only enough for one more day. I would like to get down into lower land to the west but can't see how this is possible now - no trails into that area according to Sr. Helfego. To the east of camp about 3/4 mile several hills form a wall - apparently connected with the Monte de la Pluma. Not much sense in hunting east of camp since land is similar to that around camp and elevation is about the same. Oct. 14 Hunted in large circle around camp for 4 hours this morning without hearing a jay. Cloudy all day long but no rain. Out hunting again in mid-afternoon without luck
