R.K. Selander, 1952 49 La Puerta, 7000ft., 31 mi. SW Arriaga, Vera cruz, Mexico. during the night. August 1 Lamb reports hearing a pygmy owl calling near camp during the night. Clear this morning, not too cold. Went hunting at 7:30. Hunted within a radius of 1/2 mile of camp until 11:00. Did not run onto any wrens (C. megalopterus) until about 10:30. Lamb got one and I took another. Collected ( beside the wren) 2 Aphelocoma coerulescens , 2 red-eyed towhees ( gave one to Lamb), 1 Hutton's wrens ( gave to Lamb), 2 Junco phaeonotus ( 1 adult, 1 immature ), 1 Toxostoma ocellatum Longuemarensis, 1 Basilurum ( species? ) , 1 Burnt Nightingale Thrush ( Cultharces occidentalis ) and 1 Troglodytes brunneicollis. Lamb took a Diglossa baritula, Violet- eared hummingbird, a spurred (=red-eyed) towhee. At about 3:00 I heard wrens near camp and obtained 6 specimens. Aphelocoma joyi heard about camp in the afternoon. Fog rolling in at about 6:00. Rain started at 8:00. Rather cold. In general birds are not too abundant at the camp. Little noise at dawn, although juncoes, towhees, wrens (not C. megalopterus) heard singing during morning. At noon fog passed through camp area. Birds of all kinds silent during this foggy period. Hunting very difficult. Late in the afternoon it cleared and birds became more active. Lamb reports seeing a Pipilo fuscus near camp.
