R.K. Selander, 1952 La Puerta, 7000ft., 31 mi. SW Orizaba, Vera cruz , Mexico . (July 31 dense cover of shrubs and herbs. Mount Orizaba is visible from the top of many of the hills near camp. A few pine trees present among the oaks, especially on the higher rises. Across the road to the north there is a flat plain-like expanse without covering of oaks. Some corn fields there. To the east of camp the land drops off abruptly as the road to Orizaba descends through a wide valley. West of camp, the drop is much more gradual and the oak forest continues down to 6000ft where it ceases rather abruptly. Weather here rather chilly most of the day. Fog rolled in in late afternoon. Hunted in the morning until 12:30. Collected nine C. megalopterus. Also took a wood wren (Henicophina leucophrys), Steller jay, Pipilo ocai, Atlapetes pileatus, and Pitigonus leneereus. Tyrannus crassirostris, Chlorospingus opthalmicus, Red-eyed towhee taken by Hank today. Hank reports having taken a Dendrocopus nillousa here yesterday. Aphelocoma caeruleseca noted in oaks around camp. Turkey vultures flying over. In the late afternoon a indian came to camp with 2 strange green lizards which he said occurred on the trunks and branches of the oak trees. Bought the lizards for 40 centavos a piece. These lizards have yellow eyelids and sulphur-yellow bellies. Dorsally, they are quite a bright green. 5 Kissel birds until 8:00 P.M. when it started to rain. Rained
