July 30 Mexico City, D.F. to La Puerta, 7000 ft., 31 mi. SW Orizaba,
Veracruz, Mexico.
forest just outside of Mexico city on the hills. A
steep grade leads from Mexico City up to 9500 feet
or so. Should get C. megalopterus in the pines here;
will try collecting here when we return from Veracruz.
Drove through Puebla to within 4 Km. of Tehuacan
where the road turns (forks) and heads for Orizaba.
We arrived at the summit (La Puerta) at about
9:00 P.M. A heavy fog was rolling in when we stopped.
Lamb had set his tent up about 100 yds from the
road behind a Mexican store which faces the road.
July 31 La Puerta, 7000 feet, 31 mi. SW (by road) Orizaba,
Veracruz, Mexico.
We are camped at the exact summit of the road
from Tehuacan to Orizaba in a clearing surrounded
by a thick, well-developed forest of oaks. The
oaks are mostly large trees; there is a heavy under-
story of brush (not thorny) and herbaceous plants.
The trees are covered with epiphytic ferns, mosses,
lichens, and other plants. Many ferns under the
oaks in the moist spots. Several species of oaks
appears to be present, including an oak shrub
bearing very small leaves. Patches of corn and
agave have been planted here and there on the hillside.
The terrain is rolling and numerous small draws
are present. On certain slopes, oak trees are for the
most part absent; in such areas there is an extremely
