July 29 Rio Metztitlan, 4000 ft., 20 mi. N Atotonilco, Hidalgo, Mexico.
Shot one C. joiosus in walnut tree near camp just as we
were breaking camp at 8:30 in the morning. No idea skeleton
of it. Left camp at 9:00 and drove to Mexico City,
D.F., arriving there at noon.
Mexico City, 7500 ft., D.F., Mexico.
Picked up mail at the American Embassy, then went to
Hotel Geneve where we registered for the night. Ate dinner
and went to a show. Wrote letters home.
July 30 During the night our truck was broken into
(glass of the side window smashed) and the following
items stolen. 35 mm. camera, field-glasses, 2 rolls of
35 mm. color film, sport-coat, 2 pairs slacks, dress,
ties (about 15), underwear, clock glasses, duffle-bag,
2 white shirts. Specimens, papers, guns, shells, etc.
OK. - Stopped by at Department of Forestal y Caza
and talked to Dr. Morias. He said my collecting
permit had been mailed (when?). Gave me a copy
of it. I noticed that Dr. Miller's permit was in
the folder with mine. Mine is #35, Dr. Miller's
#36. Date of issue is June 11. Bought 10 gallons
of purified H2O for 2.40 pesos. Left Mexico City at
2:00 P.M., driving along highway toward Puebla.
[Mr. Lamb had car trouble in Pachuca yesterday
but promised to meet us at La Puerta, 7000 ft.,
31 mi. SW Orizaba, Veracruz.] Collected some
beetles on lupine at around 9500 feet in the
valley of Mexico. Noted large expanses of pine
