San Pedro River, 4000 ft., 25 mi. SE Chihuahua,
Chihuahua, Mexico.
July 20
Saw 2 (O7+?) Pyrrhuloxia in cottonwoods. 1 unidentified
flycatcher (small). Texas nighthawks (10) flying at
dusk. Bats along river fed at night, flying at least
until 1:00 A.M., One brown tomber in shrubs near
the river. Collected a small snake on dirt road
beside cornfield at 10:00 P.M. Jays of several
kinds seen along river and especially in mesquite and
tuna, cactus stand located about 100 yds. from the
river.
July 21
Broke camp at 9:45. Weather fine and clear. Ravens
flying over cornfield. Continued along Mexican Highway
# 45 through farm land near Camargo. At Camargo,
Dick, Toleno, and Selman turned back to return to Phoenix,
Arizona.
At 2 mi. 5 Delicas noted a shrike (Lanius ludovicianus)
and a few great-tailed grackles near the highway. At
Saucillo, noted barn swallows. Just south of Camargo
saw crows and 2 Snea doves. Ravens and turkey
cultures all along highway.
At 39 mi. SSW Camargo, found a cactus wrenis
(C. brunneicapillus) nest (See species account). Continued
onto 35 mi. S El Entronque, 5000 ft., Durango
where we camped at edge of deeply cut, dry river bed.
