highway toward Chihuahua to -
20 mi. S Juarez, 35.00 ft., Chihuahua, Mexico
Camped in mesquite just off the highway at 9:00 P.M.
Everyone very tired. Melocicco (Pyrota, Eucanula) coming
to lights. Also, many June beetles, some of them Phyllophaga
July 20 Mexican Highway #45 from 20 mi. S. Juarez, through
Chihuahua (City) to San Pedro River, 4000 ft., 25 mi.
SE Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico.
Broke camp at 9:00; driving most of the day, with
a two hour stop in Chihuahua where we had lunch.
Near Chihuahua observed 1 Mexican crested
flycatcher in mesquite, mourning dove (common),
turkey vulture (all along the highway). At Villa
Ahumada saw 2 barn swallows. The country
is rather barren; few birds seen from road. We
drove through wide, flat valleys. Vegetation mainly
mesquite and cactus; Cattonwoods along streams.
At 6:00 P.M., we camped in the dry river bed (San Pedro
River) just off the highway; a nice camp site with
thickets of willows and cattonwoods lining the
river bed. Cornfields bordering the riparian vegetation.
Just a small amount of water in the river bed -
about 2 feet wide. The river bed itself is about
40 feet wide. According to a Mexican, whom we talked,
with
the river was full and flooding only 10 days ago.
Collected a small turtle in the stream - only one
seen. Birds rather abundant but difficult to
approach. Flushed 2 quails (sp.? ) near willows.
