July 18 Highway from 3 mi. N Prescott to Valley of the Gila,
+2000 ft., 3mi SE Bylas, Graham Co., Arizona (via Phoenix)
Picked up Yale Selman in Phoenix; continued driving
until about 5:30, at which time we camped in the
Valley of the Gila. Camp located in stand of mesquite
near some cattonwoods at side of road. Cicadas
abundant on mesquite, "singing" until about 9:00 P.M.
Chordeiles acutipennis common ones mesquite at dusk
Tenebrina present and flying. As darkness
approached, nighthawks flew lower and lower, finally
skining just over the vegetation. No sounds uttered.
Other birds present include Lucy warbler, Couch's
flycatcher, Western (?) Kingbird, unidentified Oriole.
July 19 Collected one lizard at 8:30 in morning.. Broke camp
at 9:00. Drove all day, arriving at El Paso, Texas
at 4:00 P.M. Had truck greased, then crossed bridge into
Mexico at 6:05. American custom official asked
if we had any firearms. Mexicans motioned us over
to curb and began examination. After carrying one
box and our suitcase into the office building, the
office suggested that perhaps I could pay them
something "so that the truck would not have to be
unloaded". I nodded approval and they returned
the box and suit case to the truck without looking into
them. Gave the officer two dollars - he seemed pleased.
Dick chose to leave a .22 rifle on the American side, so
apparently the firearms restriction are still in force.
Bought car insurance in Tuaray, then drove along
