Pipilo fuscus
August 14 15 mi. N Cuernavaca, 8900 ft., Morelos, Mexico. - Shot one and noted two others feeding in plowed field near stand of oak tree. Feeding with a flock of Junco phaeonotus about 25 feet from the edge of the vegetation (oak stand). When disturbed, one bird flew toward cover, but perched on dead log, making an easy shot. Surprised to get this species at 8900 ft. [although I note that Davis took birds of this species just below here at 6000 feet]. Birds observed not for (1/00 g.) from this lot where I observed several pairs of Pipilo erythrophthalmus, but in a more park-like situation with lower brush beneath the pines. Would be good spot to get comparative study of the niches of the two species. - Noted on skinning specimen, an adult male, that the testicles were almost if not full size - so apparently breeding.
