Pipilo ocai
August 1 La Puerta, 7000 ft., 31 mi. SW Orizaba, Veracruz, Mexico.
(Took a specimen July 31 in a thicket beneath a stand of tall oak trees.) This individual is apparently pure ocai.) This species is not very common here, being greatly outnumbered by P. erythrophthalmus.
P. ery. one of commonest birds in the area, occurring in brushy spots. Seems to prefer the slopes where oaks are absent while ocai occurs in brush beneath oak trees. Specimens of ery. examined look pure. P. ery. heard singing today. Have not heard song of ocai. Lamb reports seeing an individual of P. fusceus near camp - no further data. According to Sibley's revision, some hybridization between P. ery. and P. ocai occurs near Orizaba and in this general region. Atlapetes jilaeatus occurs in some brushy areas with Pipilo ocai.
