Toxostoma [illegible]
[illegible]
August 13
15 mi. N Cuernavaca, 8900ft., Morelos, Mexico - Heard
a loud "chip" given by individuals of the species.
Note is very loud and can be induced by an
imitation of it. Notes given singly at short intervals
(5-10 seconds). The bird was perched in a shrub
beneath an oak tree and remained concealed
from view even while answering my call. Finally
came right of the bird and shot it. This species
is probably reasonably common in the area around
camp as for several occasions during the
morning hunt I heard the notes described
above.
August 15
Heard loud note - more like "chuck" than "chip"
given by individual in low, very dense stand
of small oak bushes and herbs. Bird refused
to reveal itself despite my imitations of its note.
Answered my imitations rather well, however.
This species seems to frequent dark parts of the
forest, preferring thick, dense vegetation beneath
oak and pine trees. Notes are rather sharp -
sound almost as if being made by a mechanical
device.
