Complahychnus brunneicollis
Sept. 4
16 mi. SE Lago de Moreno, 6700ft., Jalisco, Mexico.
Specimen: adult male placed in formalin. Dri red-brown,
nestler than C. humilis; feet a nondescript brownish-gray.
Plumage worn. Inner two primaries on either side new
and sheathed at base for about 1/2 inch. Next outward
primary on left side 1/2 inch long all sheath. Some feather
on right side has just been dropped, as there is an empty
follicle. Crests covert above 2nd primary on left
side missing = empty follicle. Some on right side.
Crests covert of inner primary new on either side.
Outer secondary on either side new; sheathed about
1/2 inch at base, a little behind the inner primary
in development. Crests covert new. Eighth secondary
(counting toward body) on right wing new, and unsheathed
about 1/2 inch at base. Some feather in left wing old.
Remainder of plumage old & worn.
Also took an immature ♀.
These were taken in a situation similar to that near
Japaceto. On a rolling hill near the highway, Tuna
cactus, mesquite, and a species of broad-leaved tree
dominant vegetation. Also several evergreen broad-
leafed shrubs (large present). Also a tree showing short,
short leaves growing directly from branches. A
heavy undercover of grass and herbs. Cacti about
15 feet high at least. Wrens located in cactus along
a stone wall (3 ft high) in thick stand of cacti
and trees. Behavior of these birds rather different
