Cymbilophynchus humilis
August 22
Pie de la Cuesta, 20ft., Guerrero, Mexico
15 feet in height. Nest similar generally to that of
C.rufinucha rufinucha but smaller. Entrance
is on the side. [drawing]-entrance]. An adult
entered the nest and shortly thereafter reappeared
with a wisp of yellow material in its bill. Flew
to low branch once then to low herbaceous plants
beneath the tree. All the while 4 other were
(including juveniles - at least one) foraging in the
same tree. (Will investigate this nest more
closely in a few days.),
It is my impression that worms tend to remain localized.
I encountered pairs today in some spots as yesterday.
Specimen I have taken suggest that two different
age-groups of juveniles are present - one older, having
won, adult-like plumage (but with dull brown
eyes and small gonads) and the other just out
of the nest (pin-feathers on belly). Gonads of
adults (and brood-patches of adult ??) not indicative
of breeding at present time, however. Songs suggest
breeding activity also.
August 23
Took 4 juveniles and 1 adult. One juvenile had definite
brownish cast to feet & legs. Birds not very
active today for some reason. Became rather
silent after 10:00 A.M - but continued to feed
silently. Located a flock (four or five) near
the nest I located yesterday. Shot 2 juveniles here.
