Campylorhynchus m.
megalopterus
August 14 15 mi. N Cuernavaca, 8900 ft., Morelos, Mexico.-
Hunted for 6 hours today looking for this species. Heard the low, soft "Chub, Chub" foraging notes on several occasions, but in each case, the birds failed to respond to squawks or owl-calls. Birds invariably moved off, so that I got no more than a short glance at them. On occasion they give a soft "Cha cha-cha" while feeding. Often run along branches in the manner of Jays. Are found foraging on the branches of oaks, especially those heavily loaded or covered with moss & small ferns. Frequent dense stands; not present in park areas.
August 15 No birds of this species seen or heard during morning's hunt. If birds are present in any numbers, I should have noted a group or two. May become very wary and silent after breeding season, but not so at La Puerta. May prefer region where there is more moisture and, hence, more epiphytic growth on the trees.
