R.K.Selander, 1952 Cyanocitta stelleri August 1 La Puerta, 7000 ft., 31 mi. SW Orijaba, Veracruz, Mexico. Calls of this jay heard infrequently in the oak forest. (1 immature specimen taken yesterday). Much more wary than Steller jays I have hunted in northern Utah; refuse to come to owl imitation and/or imitation of their calls. Note similar to C. stelleri of Utah but noticeably higher in pitch, less harsh. Heard an individual scream in manner of red-tail hawk (I have frequently heard Steller jay in northern Utah give this cry). These jays are frequently the top most branches of the larger oaks. August 13 15 mi. N Cuernavaca, 8900 ft., Morelos, Mexico. - One lone bird came to my imitation jay call. Flew to top of large pine tree (25 feet above ground) and gave a few mousel "shaa" notes or calls. Missed my shot at him. Calls note as deep nor resonant as those of C. stelleri I have heard in northern Utah.
