Apheloceena coerulescens
La Puerta, 7000 ft., 31 mi. SW Orizaba, Veracruz, Mexico.
August 1 This jay quite numerous in the oak forest near camp.
A small group stops rather close to camp in some
oaks near a native house. Very wild and difficult
to approach. Squawking usually excites them to calling,
but they refuse to approach. I obtained two, a juvenile
and an adult. Most frequently encountered along the
edges of the forest or in clearings. When disturbed
by a shot they often fly up over the trees, very swiftly
instead of sneaking off through the trees. Steller
jays are present in the same stands of oak, although
they are rather less numerous. Chester Lamb reported
having shot at a Cyanolyca maura not far from
camp. He reported having taken one here 10 years ago
in July.
Jays heard calling near camp at various times in the
afternoon; must be rather common in this area.
