Cissolopha san - blasiana
August 22 Pie de la Cuesta, 20ft., Guerrero, Mexico. - Common
in mangrove - palm vegetation in flocks of 3-6
individuals. Juveniles and adults, mostly the
former. Very easily approached: show little fear.
Prefer mangroves and other broad - leaved trees -
sorly ascending to tops of palms. Flight is slow
with much gliding. Very noisy and prone to
follow me as I hunted. Noted several birds
feeding on the fruit of the mangrove tree. Calls
are varied = "Heee; Hoaww;"Nee ooo; Haa;
Ha-Ha-Ha (very sharp). Quite unlike any
jay with which I am familiar in that they will
allow me to approach within 3 or 4 feet while they
are feeding. Noted two juveniles "mob" an adult
- apparently begging to be fed ??.. Shot one
juvenile - and the adult and other juvenile
remained perched in the tree!!.
August 23 Again noted commonly. Definite preference for the
mangroves. Most individuals show evidence of
immaturity in their plumage.
Aug. 24 one shot (put in formalin). Common; not confined
to mangroves.
Aug. 26 Numerous in small groups in mangroves, and in
denser trees in mesclows and up toward the
foothills. Juvenile noted "performing" begging behavior before
another bird (adult?). This juvenile was about same
size as those taken Aug. 22,
