Colaptes calus
August 13 15mi. N Cuernavaca, 8900ft., Morelos, Mexico - flushed
two along edge of oak stand. They were on the ground
in waving grass. One flew about 25 yds and lit on
the ground; the other flew into the oaks and out of sight.
One gave familiar flicker call, not noticeably different
from that given by some species in northern Utah.
There were only two individuals noted.
August 16 lengua de Vaca, 9500ft., Mexico, Mexico.
Heard calls in pine-pine forest and sighted one
individual clinging to trunk of fir tree. Calls
sound higher in pitch than those of C.C. collaris.
Behavior similar, however; very wary, skulking
just out of shotgun range.
