Philortyx fasciatus
August 24 Pie de la Cuesta, 20ft., Guerrero, Mexico. - at about
1:00 P.M. I flushed a covey of 5-8 from the ground
in a grassy area immediately adjacent to a small
spring and several small ponds fed by the spring.
Much grass and herbaceous plants of various species,
and also several large broad-leaved trees in the
area. The birds flew into a large tree (about
15 feet from flushing point) and became still. Shot
one at close range with a half-load. The other
did not fly, but apparently slipped off because
I could not locate any others in the tree. I
flushed a single bird nearby a short time
later. It flew to the tree and perched in plain sight
a position where it was easily observed. I
did not have my shot-gun loaded, and the bird
flew before I could get loaded. Flew to the
ground some distance away. - None others
seen, although I hunted through the surrounding
area for sometime in hopes of getting other specimens.
According to the Mexican Checklist, this is a mountain
form - surprising to get them down here?
August 26 Single bird flushed near same spot as that in which
day before
I encountered the flock yesterday. Flew to hill covered
with thorn brush, about 75 yds distant.
August 27 Flushed one individual along fence.
August 28 One flushed in meadow-like area.
