R.K.Selander, 1952 Butorides meridensis August 21 Pie de la Cuesta, 20 ft, Guerrero, Mexico. - Several seen in mangroves along edge of the laguna. Many harsh chicken-like calls and screams. Retreat in the mangroves when disturbed. Rather numerous as indicated by the number heard calling. August 23 Took two specimens at edge of water in mangroves. Both appear to be juveniles. This species more common than I supposed. Saw at least 15 today. August 24 Noted at least 10 in mangroves - often in company with larger herons. Rather sedentary, retreating into mangroves rather than flying long distances when disturbed. Will answer imitations of their note; - become very excited when imitation is given. August 26 About 5 in mangroves.
