Rio Mezquital, 6850 ft., 12 mi. NE Durango, Durango, Mexico.
Prove about 2 miles to point where dirt road makes
a ford across the river. Mode camp along river under
cotton woods. Across the river there is a large tule

Saw several mallards, [took one for the pot], about

2 sparrow hawks, several white-fronted doves,
numerous inca doves, few mourning doves, one
black phoebe, 3 killdeers, 3 Audubon coracoras,
one solitary sand piper, one sharp-shinned hawk (?),
[?ila woodpecker (two seen - very large - in tuna cortes).
Then hunted in mixed tuna cortes - mezquite association
on the hillside just across the river. Vegetation very
thick. Heard a cortes wren or two. Took two Toxostoma
currucothe in tuna cortes and one mequite. Their note
is a liquid "swee-lee", sometimes given "swee-we-
bee" Sometimes more like "swee-beet". Call given
repeatedly. These thrushes rather easily approached. Also
took on 2 lotares in mezquite.
Skinned specimen at night. At about 9:00, I heard
