Sept.4.
Jaqueuto, Guanajuato to 16 mi.SE Lagos de Moreno,
6700 ft., Jalisco, Mexico.
Left Jaqueto at 2:15 and drove to the above
locality where I collected 2 C. brunneicapillus
and an adult Pipilo fuscus (in formalin # 1447).
Also get one black meelvid. After hunting for
about an hour, we continued along, making
camp at a point -
3 mi.SE Zacatecas, +8000 ft., Zacatecas, Mexico.
Camped at 9:00 just off highway in stand of
mesquite. Under cover of grass gorged heavily,
noted numerous Peromyscus running about
under mesquite busters. Heard a Killdeer
(Choradrius vociferous) calling as it passed over
at 11:00 P.M. No insects to speak of coming
to light. Rather cold here. Sky clear; Moon full.
Skinned one C. brunneicapillus and put another
and a Pipilo fuscus in formalin.
Sept.5
8 mi.SE Zacatecas, +8000 ft., Zacatecas. to
Rio Mezquital, 6850 ft., 12 mi.NE Durango, Durango, Mexico.
Before breaking camp at 8 mi.SE Zacatecas, I hunted
about 1/2 hour in the mesquite and tuna cactus (see photo).
Collected one juvenile Cactus wren (C. brunneicapillus)
and two Toxostoma currirostre, Toxostoma rather common
here in tuna cactus and mesquite. Heard a few others.
Cactus wrena giving "Caw" call. Colaptes calus heard calling.
Pipilo fuscaus - 4 seen in mesquite near our camp. Mexican
goldfinch quite common. Ineas dorno present in small numbers.
