August 24
Pie de la Cuesta, 20ft., Guerrero, Mexico.
Platysaris aglaiae {ad. taken in thick mangroves},
(specimen noted up as a skeleton)
Philortyx fasciatus (one taken from flock of nine),
Sporophila minuta (one taken, others seen in thorn-
scrub). In addition, I noted one large spiroe of
Myiarchus in the mangroves. Also a swallow -
(Petrochelidon?) nb. flying over mangroves. Noted
small black birds in thorn scrub = Volatimia
jacobina? Took a small snake and a large
(-OK. Aug. 26)
lizard in the mangroves. Several (4-5) sandpipers seen.
Returned to hungalow at 1:00. Have slight
sinus trouble today; rather sick.
August 25
Writing field notes in the morning. At 1:00, left for
trips to Montosa Island in small outboard motor boat.
Island is located in the laguna about 10
mile (one hour ride on boat) from the eastern most
edge (= near our bungalow.) It is about 300 yards
from shore. Island itself is roughly 500 x 200 yds.
Rather hilly. A Mexican family lives there. Fisherman
fishing nearby at the mouth of a river stop there
for the night. Rather heavily vegetated with a variety
of trees (no mangroves) and herbaceous plants.
Many large boulders on one end near the water.
Another smaller island lies to the north-east of
this larger island (about a mile from it). Counted
eight trees (low, dense) on this island. The owner
of the boat remarked that birds (pelicans) roost on
these islands at night, coming to them at about 6:00PM.
