August 21 Hunted for two hours in the palms and mangroves surrounding the tip of the laguna. Birds abundant.
Noted the following species: (see species accounts also)
grebe (-sp.?)-2 individuals in laguna; small, about size of pied-bill grebe, possibly longer necked; diving.
Brown pelican- lone bird on laguna, near shore;
dead bird at edge of laguna; 2 flying along the level just above the breakers.
- Cormorant (P. sinocerus?)-one in laguna,
swimming very low in water near shore, Not
P. uritius I am certain.
- Butorides virescens-several in mangroves along edge of laguna. Many chicken-like calls. Hard to get a good look, since they hide in the vegetation. I am not absolutely certain of this identification, so will attempt to get specimens (Yes, see beyond)
- Mycteria americana-shot one from top of mangrove tree-only individual seen.
- Coragyps atratus-common; perching at tops of palms.
- Cathartes aura?-few ?
- Jacana spinosa-4 feeding in logs at edge of laguna.
