August 20 Chilpaningo, Guerrero, Mexico
W.W. Brown showed me several skins which he had made. All were wrapped in cotton or in thread and placed in a metal half-cylinder, [☺].
He uses a large hair-pin like clip to keep the tail spread. Also ties the wings very tightly together. Brown is thinking of going to Los Angeles to stay with a sister there, and may ride back with us when we return from Piede la Cuesta.
Left Chilpaningo at 5:00 and continued to Acajules. Road torn up the entire distance. Several wood stops while road was cleared of rocks and rail which had fallen from the cliffs. Rain falling most of the time. Noted many bats flying near and over the road all along the way after sunset (at about 7:00 P.M.), - Arrived in Acajules at 9:30 P.M. after a very tough drive. Drove to Piede la Cuesta, 8 mi. W Acajules (good paved highway) and rented a bungalow at [illegible] (10 pesos per day). Too dark to see much of the country here tonight - but beach is very nearby. Breakers sound loud and close. Several small geckos crawling on the cream-colored cement walls of our bungalow. Numerous crabs of many different sizes crawling over the sand. Retired at 11:00.
