K. Salander, 1952 38 August 18 Lengua de Vaca, 9500ft. to Tuxpan, 5200ft, Michoacan, Mexico. Moved camp in afternoon. Arrived in Tuxpan around 4:00 P.M. Stayed at "Quinta Mitzi" Motor Court (20 pesos) which is located along highway about 1 miles east of the town of Tuxpan. Hunted in heavy rain along the Rio Tuxpan. Riparian vegetation narrowly restricted to stream side. A tree much like if not actually the box-elder. Many herbaceous species including fields of Cosmos. Birds noted include Sporophila torquata, a small Icterus (2 collected Aug 18), unidentified small sparrow (specimen taken, # 1309.), one Thryomanes bewickii in tree near motor hut, Vermilla flycatcher (common on low-wired fences and around buildings), Myiozetetes similis (in trees in farm-house yard), Melanotis caeruleus (apparently fairly common in thick riparian vegetation), Caridix mexicanus, Hiriraca caerulea (specimen taken Aug 18), Spizina paaltria (common in fields), Volatinia jacarina (common in fields of flowers), black mullter, turkey-mullter, and English sparrow (flocking in trees in the plaza of Tuxpan in the evening; hundreds). No Campylobrychus were seen. Situation ecologically rather similar to that at Rio Metzitlan, Hidalgo, but not nearly as many wulbers present along stream. Also riparian vegetation not extending back from river more than 15-20 feet. Many of same species found at Rio Metzkitlen are present here, so ecological situation seemingly are rather similar.
