August 14 15 mi. N Cuernavaca, 8900 ft., Morelos, Mexico
an Athletes pileatus (immature), and a large flycatcher.
Noted two Coleptes coerle at edge of oak stand. Birds
not as active as yesterday. Saw C. megalopterus twice
but unable to get specimens or approach near enough
to get many good glimpses of them.
Rather tired in the afternoon; eyes ached badly, so had
a short rest. Feeling slightly better along about
4:00, so skinned [four] specimens, putting three more
[illegible] in formalin. Will try one more day to get some
wrens. Then back to Mexico City to see if check has
arrived. After that, down to Acapulco for a week.
Noted several small lizards (2 inches or so in length) running
along moss covered dead tree trunks. Some June
beetles coming to light tonight.
August 15 Hunted west of camp for 4 1/2 hours in the morning.
Did not see nor hear C. megalopterus. Collected a juvenile
Myadestes obscurus, Dendrocopos leucotos?, 2 juvenile
Catharus sp., a Berthia familiaris, a tanager sp.,
and an Athletes pileatus. Noted numerous flocks
of Junco phaeonotus along roads and railroad
tracks. Heard Coleptes coerle calling. Returned to
camp at 11:00 and skinned six birds. Left eye badly
swollen from insect? Note received yesterday. I am
surprised that I have been unable to find wrens
the last two days. Apparently, the only group in the
vicinity is the one I encountered August 13 and 14.
Rain falling at about 8:00. Some June beetles coming,
