August 12 Puebla, Puebla to Mexico City, D.F.
Drove to Mexico City. Stopped at Embassy to pick up mail. Government fellowship check not here. Write letter to Nat. Sci. Foundation one to Dr. Miller asking about the check. We are low on money so will have to remain near Mexico City until check arrives.
In afternoon drove to camp site 15 miles north of Cuernavaca, Morelos.
8900 ft
15 mi. N. Cuernavaca, 8900 ft., Morelos, Mexico
Camped just off road (near Km 54 sign) in a clear space beneath tall pines. The country around camp is heavily vegetated with pines and oaks. Many large bushes beneath trees. Herbaceous vegetation thick; large lupine plants and other herbs. Very little farming here. Has the appearance of a game reserve as compared to places we have seen in Veracruz. This forest continues for many miles in all directions - apparently, a good forest of the original vegetation. Many of the oaks are covered with epiphytes ferns, mosses and other plants. Grasses on ground [illegible] in many places. Most of the pines are large trees. We are camped on the Cuernavaca side of the mountain but the same forest continues up over the summit and down the slope toward Mexico City. Summit is 9500 feet or more. Weather here very wet. Rain falling hard about 4:00 P.M. Stopped in a hour and a heavy fog set in. Birds common around camp.
