August 7 Late and swifts. Promised to take us up to the cone
tomorrow. - Rain began at 8:00: Fell hard
for about 1 1/2 hours. It is now 10:00 and the rain
has ceased. Very few insects about. Nothing of
interest coming to the lamp.
Tomorrow I plan to hunt to the northwest of
camp in the stand of large trees. Birds are
not very common in the coffee and bananas.
Lomb didn't get a bird today, but Julio (Lomb's
helper) brought in six; a Basilatcus rufescens and
Sabre-wing hummingbird included. - Oh yes, Turkey
cultures flying over camp today. No lizards seen
during morning hunt. Bonnie picked up a frog
lost night (cataloged as August 6).
August 8 Very sick this morning. Stayed in bed all day. Vomited
once in the morning. Lomb failed to get any birds today.
Collected a few beetles this evening at light. Went to
bed at 8:00, after being up about an hour.
August 9 During the night, a mouse or some other animal
took the heads of two bird specimens which I had left
uncovered on the table. I repaired the specimens as
best as possible. Feeling good today after my long
rest of yesterday. Lomb, Julio, and I drove down
to the river gorge about 1 mile south of here and
hunted in the trees and coffee bushes for two
or three hours. Birds very sparse, just as about
camp. I collected one Majodnastes (luteiventris?),
