August 6
2 mi. S Coatepec, 3700 ft., Veracruz, Mexico
graves. A heavy rain fell for 2 hours, beginning
at about 6:00 P.M. Cleared around 8:30. Brown
(P. murgato)
jay I heard calling about camp. Hummingbird
(spp ?) seen. Went to bed at 9:00. Very tired
after day of travel and stop over in Jalapa.
August 7
Up at 6:30. Weather fine; clear. Hunted along a
road northwest of camp. Birds sparse. Noted
Brown jay, Centurus aurifrons (common in trees),
Compylorhynchus zonatus (3 collected, a few
others heard), Phlogothraupis sanguinolenta (a single
bird seen and collected), Piranga (flava?) [strikethrough]
(1 immature male taken), Myiodynute (spp.?) (taken),
Basilarus ruficeps (1 taken of pair seen),
Icterus (gradacanda ?) (common, 1 taken),
Sable-wing hummingbird (bunch collected one).
At 11:30 drove to Jalapa to see about car insurance.
Took Bonnie down to river near Coatepec to do
washing. Collected a few mayflies and a Selirus
molucella on large rocks along the river. Saw
another. Returned to camp at 3:00 P.M., began
skinning birds. Weather clear - not too hot here
during the day. At 6:00 a large flock of swifts
(spp.?) flew high over camp. The flock circled
over camp for ±15 minutes, flying slowly but
very high. Medium sized birds (black swift ?).
A native informed us that there is a cave located
about 1 mile south of camp where we can find
