R.K.Selander, 1952 25 August 5 Cerro Guzman, 200 ft., 20 mi. W Veracruz, Veracruz, Mexico. Up at 7:00. Clear weather. Hunted over some territory as I did on August 3. Located the nests of C. rufinucha again; took photographs. Collected two C. rufinucha; heard only a few others. No signs of C. zonates today. Collected an Icterus gularis. These birds common here. Also got a squirrel cuckoo (Piaya cayana); saw several more. Took an Empidonax albigularis which I strove to lumb. Took three more lizards and a small, green frog which was found on the tent, a native brought in a Boa which he had recently killed. Noted several Audubon's caracaras flying about today. Astec Parakeets are very common about here but difficult to collect; noted flying over camp in pairs or flocks up to 30 individuals, especially near dusk. Small groups of boat-tailed grackles noted flying near camp around 5:00 P.M. Lomb reports having shot at a jayjay owl today. Also what hearing chocalacos in the forest. Now that I have had a better chance to look over this area, I am not so sure that we are in typical lower Humid Tropical zone. There are a good many savannah-like areas about: (weedy fields dotted with small trees) which suggest the arid division of the Tropical zone. This perhaps explains? the occurrence of C. zonates in the area. We seem to be getting certain other species not typical of the lower Humid Tropical zone. There are not many palm trees
