August 3 Cerro Heyman, 200 ft., 20 mi. W Veracruz, Veracruz, Mexico.
It is now 11:00 P.M. and the weather is still good; no sign
of rain. Tried the insect sheet with lantern at 9:30,
but nothing of interest came in.
We are sleeping under the mosquito-netting; also using
insect repellent during the daytime. Both feeling
well. Frogs still calling all about camp. A large
bat flying about the car about an hour ago.
Have not heard a pauraque calling - should
hear them at night according to Lamb.
August 4 Hunted within a short radius of camp. Collected a lone
C. rufinucha in a clearing. Later encountered a flock
of C. zonatus in fairly open country. Took another C. rufinucha
at same locality. Shot a groove-billed ani. These birds
one of commonest species in the area; rather easily obtained.
Lamb traded a Aratinga aster for a flycatcher I had.
Collected a few lizards. Have noted at least two species
of lizards, the large gray or brownish-one and a smaller,
striped greenish species. Collected a flycatcher resembling
a derby flycatcher but much smaller; bill proportionately
smaller. Lamb called it a [illegible] flycatcher but
I can't find the name in the literature available.
Very hot today, specially from 11:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.
Coole[d off somewhat after 4:00 P.M. Bonnie and I
drove to Veracruz at 8:00; had a sundae and brought
back some cold drinks. Went to bed at 11:00.
