August 3 Cerro Huyman, 200 ft., 20mi. W Veracruz, Veracruz, Mexico. Lizards are abundant along the dirt roads and foot trails even in the moister areas. I collected a good series of them. Several species present. Also shot a large brown snake found beside the dirt road leading to the south from camp. Only snake seen today. Butterflies are extremely abundant everywhere. Five or more species of Odonata seem flying about all about camp. Birds noted today by me or Lomb are (*=collected): Bowl tailed grackle (seen by Lomb), Sporophila torquella (seen by Lomb), cardinal (Lomb), Kingbird (Conchi's ?; collected by Lomb), *Brown jay (common), *red-lored parrot (Lomb), Aratinga curricularis (seen by Lomb), Seterus species. (the Orchard Oriole is common in large flocks, frequenting the more open areas), Bot. white quail (heard calling; I saw a pair), *Campylorhynchus rufinucha, *Starly flycatcher, *Valentinia jacarina (common), Seterus guloris (fairly common), *Pauraque (Nyctidromus albicollis) (Collected one sitting on lower branch of a small tree; flushed another on slope of hill covered with small trees and shrubs), Turkey vulture, Black vulture, *Divas dives (I collected one just about 100 yds from camp in a large shrub.); groove-hulled Ori (common), *Centurus aurifrons, Iuca dove, Lepottila verreauxi (reported by Lomb), American eget (I saw flying over camp). I collected an immature hawk which lomb says is the *Mexican goshawk.
