August 2 Cerro Huizman, +/- 200 ft., 20 mi. W (by road) Vera cruz,
Vera cruz , Mexico .
Arrived here at 6:00 P.M., having taken 6 hours to drive
the + 120 miles from La Puerta. Rain falling, very cloudy
over a wide area. Frogs calling loudly from nearby
ponds & flooded fields. Went to bed at 9:00, having
taken 2 chloroquin pills for malariain prevention.
August 3 Rain during the night, but sky rather clear at dawn.
Had breakfast at 7:00 and went hunting toward the
North. Our camp is located at the base of some
low rolling hills which lie to the south. These
hills are covered with a thick blanket of tropical
vegetation. The fields between the hills are cultivated:
corn and a gourd-like fruit tree being the major
crops. A few stands of very large fig trees on the
hills. Acacia trees (?) are rather numerous along
the various trails. A thick carpet of herbaceous vegetation
covers the areas not occupied by trees. Vegetation
is so thick that hunting is possible only along the
dirt roads or foot-paths. Birds very abundant but
difficult to locate in the thick vegetation. Across
the highway to the north there is an extensive
swampy area bordered by a stand of very large
trees. I should judge that we are located in a fairly ypical humid lower Tropical region. At 11:00 it
became very hot, but cooled in the afternoon. Sky
clear and a slight breeze blowing during the late
afternoon. Lightning in the east at about 7:00 P.M.
