R.K. Selander, 1952 20 August 1 La Puerta, 7000 ft., 31 mi. SW Orizaba, Veracruz, Mexico. If P. furcatus is present, three Pipilos occur here, seemingly in the same niche; that is the understory in the oak forest. There may be some subtle difference in niche requirements (see species accounts of Pipilo ocai). Florks of Corpodocus mexicanus seen in clearings around camp; very wild. Noticed a number of small black lizards on giant agaves bordering a corn field, lizards about 2 1/2 inches in length. Shot two but they escaped into loose of agaves yet and could not be found. Collected two meloids (?) on a purple flower near a corn field. Only two seen although I examined a number of these flowers. August 2 Thick fog this morning, cold. Birds generally silent and inactive. Too foggy for hunting so we decided to break camp and head down toward the lowlands of Veracruz. Started loading at 10:00 - left camp at 11:30. Following is a list of species recorded at this locality July 30 (Kamb), July 31, and August 1. * denotes species collected by either Kamb or me [not all prepared as skin]: * Campylorhynchus megaloptynus * Henicophina leucophrys * Cyanocitta stelleri * Aphelocoma coerulescens Cyanolyca nana (seen by Kamb) * Pipilo ocai * Pipilo erythrothalamus
