Cataviña to Bahía de los Angeles, Baja California Norte, Mexico.
2 May Woke up to hot, dry weather. To make a
long story short, we found no Pitophis in
the zone, even though we spent the entire
day driving back and forth between 19
and 45 mi SE El Rosario. Found a single
live Masticophis flagellum 45 mi SE there, and
saw another DOR. That locality is marked
"Los Cuates" by road sign, and there's an
immense wash with Mesquite trees, probably
a rich area for snakes. We then drove to
Bahía de los Angeles. Gasoline (Nova) was available,
surprisingly, at the junction, and the road to
the bay was repaved and quite good. We
procured a bungalow at Casa Diaz for 32
dollars, which came to 5670 pesos somehow.
Then I dropped Doris in the canyon 7 km W
of town so she could do moonlight photography.
As soon as I did so, I noticed an adult
Crotalus mitchelli entering the road about
10m in front of the car! I collected it
and raced ahead to the area where the
road parallels a rocky hill. On the first
pass I observed a live Lichanura trivirgata
gracia young male adult making headway
across the road! Six more passes produced
a Crotalus ruber adult and Coleonyx and
a Phyllodactylus. At this point the combination
