Tapachula, Chiapas, Mexico
29 Oct. Directed me back to the center of town
for the package. After getting the samples,
two of which were dead we drove out
to San Jeronimo. They had very little,
mostly just Unia lademata and U.
sebai, but also a Phaeornis & a
Mizarus u.groecinctes. Sitting in the hotel
room later we saw two birds near for
me just outside the window: a spot
breasted oriole and a pair of red-legged
honeycreepers. Later went to Ralph's
(Ralph's) to buy stuff and ran into
an American who lives in Guatemala.
He told me that most of the country
is safe and that the road blocks are
not unpleasant. He said he hears all
the stories living in Panajachel and has
heard nothing bad about San Marcos.
He encouraged me to go to Foca Santa
Julia through Malacatan and I would
have gone if I could have secured
auto insurance or else rented a car.
Neither of these can be obtained at the
border, although insurance can be gotten
in Guatemala City. The rain was getting
very intense this afternoon so we decided
to drive out the Nueva Alexandria road
