Comitan to Tapachula, Chiapas, Mexico
22 Oct. Arriving 22:00. Chatred into the Hamico
where I was instantly recognized and
welcomed. They told me that the old
"Jefe" died shortly after I left in August
1982. He smoked too much.... Had our
welcome drinks, ate dinner and went
to bed. I never drifted off to sleep
because I jammed soil deep below a
fingernail in the cloud forest.
Tapachula, Chiapas, Mexico
23 Oct. Got up early because I still couldn't
fall asleep. Blood issues slowly, in droplets,
from underneath the fingernail that I injured
yesterday. Ate breakfast, wrote field
notes, catalogued, checked the animals,
preserved, got ice and took the laundry
into town. Laid by the pool and
prepared to go out to The Azcas.
Left Tapachula at 13:00 and drove at to
Cardohatan where we bought 9 soft drinks
to go and managed to drink a few there.
Drove to San Jeronimo and had no
trouble getting Wilber, and an old man
who used to be a go-getter and a
few others to go collecting right away.
It rained on us lightly and we drove
up to Monte Perla. I was completely
