Tehuantepecto Benito Juarez Segundo, Veracruz, Mexico
14 Oct Allison was very sick today and slept at Don Jorge's
house from the time we arrived. After lantern
walking I sat with Don Jorge and his large
Indian family and then slept on a cot. At
first it was difficult to sleep at 130m elevation,
being hot, sticky, and rather filthy. But I was
so tired that I passed out within a half
hour. I was surprised to find myself cold
during the night and I needed a blanket.
Benito Juarez Segundo to Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, Mexico
15 Oct We're up cold and had to stand in the
sun until 8:00 to get warm. Ate with
the family and then drove Don Jorge to
La Laguna to buy maize. He is 64 and looks
44 easily. He is also healthy and can
doubtlessly out-walk me any day of the
week. After lunch people began bringing me
animals. I didn't take any, but the ones
I saw include, Bothrops (fer-de-lance), called
Vipera Sorda; Anolis; Corytophanes. I walked
back to the caves again, but caught nothing.
Allison and I relaxed until 1530 when
most of the men returned from work. No one
had collected a salamander, but from their
precise descriptions of animal and habitat,
I believe Bolitoglossa occur here. I also
suspect that B. revacuses does not occur in
