I quickly stopped on it to make the capture. I took about 35 Hyla regilla and Buto punctatus, some out, some beneath rocks. On the return a surprised adult ♂ Crotalus ruber call my attention to him by his loud rattle. I moved to the small cave between two boulders where he lay. As he attempted to secrete himself back into his home I pulled him out with my potato rake. I had no means by which to transport this meter + long animal back to the car, so I crushed it's neck between two rocks as it tried to implant its fangs into my flesh. We made Mexican-cheese sandwiches at the car, waited for dark, and drove the dirt roads of Mira Flores for a half hour, seeing nothing. On the highway north of Mira Flores I picked up a live Pituophis melanodracus. I nearly missed it because because it was in the sand on the right side of the highway. I almost didn't even stop the car! The snake is prety pretty. There is no black or brown over 90 % of the body, only on the tail.
