Tapechula, Chiapas, Mexico
17 Aug Monte Perla and discovered that they also
had snakes (?) waiting for me. I paid
50 pesos for a Micrurus which had
just been caught at 14:00 and 30
pesos for the other snakes. They
wanted to collect while we were
there, so Allison and I tagged and
weighed all the snakes in the car,
our laboratory. While we worked,
they brought 3 more snakes and
one was a Xenodon for which I
paid 50 pesos. Went to the pitking
rock and preserved. Then drove back
to San Jeronimo to find 14 more snakes
waiting for us. Yet another Xenodon!
It was nearly dark, so we decided to
sneak our animals and equipment into
the room for processing. Things went
smoothly and we finished in about an
hour. Went to have a quick dinner and
planned to night-drive because a big
storm was just hitting Tapechula. Drove
25 km down the Puerto Madero Rd.
Saw an incredible variety of amaurus. We
collected 50 of many species (see catalogue).
Also seen were OB Dermophis and 4
OB Bang (very large) and Buto marinus.
